Before After
Sandblasting : In addition to regular sandblasting jobs, twice a year, we do small things like small wrought iron items, yard/deck furniture, gates, fences, cast iron pots, Old milk cans, collectibles, etc. and then spray paint. Black, White, and Antique White are the standard colors. We usually do this in the months of May and October. Call as early as possible (812-604-3651) to make sure and get your name and items on the list. We also sandblast and paint Flat bed trailers and Dumpsters at this time.
You'll remember these - last year we completed a set of the early 1960's time frame, Mint Green metal yard chairs with white arm rails. My grandmother had a set of them when I was 3 or 4 years old. It was our pleasure to work on them for Sarah Davis.
This is Rick Morrow, our Sandblasting expert, sand blasting the paint off of a building near downtown Evansville, In.
General Painting Procedures
* Interior - When working on the Interior of your home or business we use drop cloths and Painters Plastic to cover all the flooring and furniture. We commence with the preparation (Prep for short) work. All surfaces must be sanded in order for the new paint to adhere. Holes, gouges, raised drywall tape, cracks and other damage are all repaired by various means. Stains are covered with the appropriate stain killer, then primer for the areas that require it. We never paint around but instead remove all door knobs, window locks, stair rails and other items and re-install after the paint job is dry and complete. Painting is conducted from the top down - Ceiling, Crown Molding, Walls, and the baseboards. We recommend painting the ceilings, trim & doors, and the closets every other time you paint the interior walls. Closets should be painted the same white as the ceilings. Although every job is different and it really depends on how much time has elapsed since your last paint job. Pop corn and other textured ceilings are to be painted only as a last resort. The reason being that they basically do not come off once painted. We recommend to remove the texture and/or slick the ceiling prior to painting. Trim work will normally get one coat and the walls and ceiling gets 2 coats of paint.
* Exterior - A lasting exterior paint job is all about preparation. About 75% of home exteriors are very dirty and require Pressure Washing to remove Dirt, Soot, Pollution, Cobwebs, Insect cocoons and so forth. A proper, long lasting paint job requires a clean surface. Then we take all the time needed to scrape, caulk, and putty, all the areas requiring it. We repair or replace all rotted/deteriorated exterior wood, including window sills, windows and doors. Spot prime all bare wood and other areas. We recommend to remove shutters and paint both sides ( if Wood) and the siding underneath the shutters every other time you paint.
(Of course this depends on how long it has been since your last paint job)
Then we apply 2 top coats first to the trim and widows, and then to the siding.
Choosing Colors
First of all lets just say it - "You cannot go wrong choosing what you like", after all as the saying goes, you have to live with it. A wheel chart, shown left, is affordable, and a great help in choosing colors. You can pick one up at the Hobby Lobby store, located at 5300 E. Indiana st.. Here are some general guidelines to help in choosing color.
* Natural sunlight and room size are the
2 main factors in choosing color.
* When painting the Exterior or Interior use white or light colors to add
size and darker shades for drama.
* For rooms that are open to one another make sure and
choose complimentary colors. (Use the wheel chart)
* Colored Ceilings are normally painted 2 shades lighter than
the walls.
* Beneath chair rails are painted white (same as trim sheen when picture
framed - or not) d or a lighter shade if the upper walls are dark. If
the upper walls are lighter the lower can go 2 shades darker.
* Walls that are completed with a level 4 drywall finish are
acceptable for a flat paint finish, walls that are finished with
a level 5 drywall finish are acceptable for a sheen finish.
Historically, the kitchen and Bathrooms get a Eggshell/Satin finish, with the
other interior rooms receiving a flat finish. 2 story interior rooms living rooms are
not normally recommended for a sheen paint as too many mistakes are on the
drywall and will show up, however this may be fine with you.
* The higher the sheen (Flat, Eggshell, Satin, Semi Gloss, Gloss, High Gloss) the easier
it is to clean. The trade off is that you will also see the mistakes in the
surfaces painted. Use Flat, Matte, Eggshell, and Satin for interior
walls and Satin, Semi-Gloss, Gloss and High Gloss for the Doors and trim.
* Remember the more coats of shiny, for example Satin, put on the walls the shinier it will get.
* It's not only okay, but widely acceptable to paint or
stain your Stair treads, Risers, Rails and spindles a paint
color instead instead of the traditional Wood Toned stain.
* Wood sided, or any type sided houses are tailor-made for a 3
color, paint scheme. Using the Rule of 60, 30, 10, with 60 %
being the Dominate color, 30% being the Secondary, and
10% the Accent color. In general, Siding is painted the
Main color, while the Fascia, Eaves, Columns, Sidelights, (windows
adjacent to main entrance way doors) and other trim, painted the secondary color,
and windows and doors the Accent color.
